CROWN REDUCTION
This process involves reducing the size of the trees overall canopy. The ends of the branches are pruned back evenly throughout the crown. This then will give the entire canopy a new appearance with a smaller crown.
The most common scenarios of a crown reduction are done on canopy percentages. For example a small reduction may be a 10% reduction compared to a larger reduction which would be 35 - 40% or maybe more depending on the species of tree. The fact being different species will react differently, some react to this procedure well othes not at all well.
The idea in having a crown reduction carried out is when the tree has become over mature and it is no longer capable of supporting the larger limbs it holds. It is also possible for any species of tree to become unstable and it may be required that larger limbs are reduced to improve stability. One other reason could be that the canopy has become too large for its surrounding areas and needs to be pulled back in. This will then in turn make the stability of the overall structure much stronger relieving it from any excess weight.
Whilst this process is being carried out a general crown clean will also be included relieving the tree of any damaged, dead or rubbing branches.
POLLARDING
In most cases the general idea of carrying out a pollard is to ensure all of the trees limbs are pruned right back to the stem resulting in only the main stem or trunk remaining. Sometimes it is possible to leave what is known as a frame work of branches to begin a new pollard.
When the pollard has been completed the tree must be given time to re-grow so it has a chance to form a new shape. It is then important to keep the pollard process on going, so the tree can be maintained to a correct standard and be monitored.
But it is important to recognise the difference between pollarding and topping. Topping is harmful to trees and should not be carried out. Different species perform differently to others. Some species will react well to pollarding such as Willow, where as species such as beech will not react at all well to such heavy pruning and will result in death.
BRANCH & LIMB REMOVAL
Sometimes it is necessary to remove certain branches of a trees crown, without fully reducing, thinning or lifting the crown. For example If a large branch or number of branches have travelled over a neighbouring boundary, it may be required that they are removed.
DEADWOODING
As a tree matures it is completely natural for it to produce dead and dying wood. The general process of “dead wooding” is to remove dead, dying and diseased branches through out the crown.
This simply purpose is to make what’s known as the impact area (directly beneath the trees canopy) a safer environment to be in, so there is no chance of any limb shedding or falling from the trees canopy.
Whilst removing the dead wood from the tree it is also necessary that crown cleaning will is included as part of the pruning operation. This meaning that any crossing, rubbing and damaged branches are removed as well.
Crown Thinning involves the selective removal of some inner and outer branches evenly throughout the trees crown. This is an effective method of allowing light to travel through the crown and allows air/wind to travel throughout the canopy rather than against it without altering the trees’ natural shape. This also means the tree can be reduced by thinning thus improving the stability of the larger limbs by removing some its foliage. This is normally worked out by percentages of the canopy. So a 10% thin would be a minor thin ( 1 branch out of every 10) where as a more realistic figure to make a difference would be 30-35%.
FELLING
When it is required that the tree has to be removed then in the majority of cases the tree will have to be sectionally dismantled. This involves the tree being climbed and taken down piece by piece in a safe manor. This can be a technical operation and can involve rigging ropes to bring the tree down safely ensuring no structures are damaged in the process.
CROWN LIFTING
This process, as the heading suggests, called crown lifting is to remove the lower lateral branches which are selected from the trees canopy. This then lifts the overall size of the trees canopy from the bottom up.
Crown lifting is generally used when the lower limbs are interfering with objects or its environment below. This then ensures that buildings, people and vehicles are free of interfering branches.
This will also help with allowing more light to break through the lower part of the crown.
FRUIT TREE PRUNNING
We generally prune fruit trees to maintain the shape and keep there size under control. This process will play a vital part in the tree's stimulation process and will determine itsfuture productivity.
Earlier in the season, depending on species, can be the best time to prune a tree as this is when the tree is dormant or during the Autumn to Winter period in many cases.
BIO-DEGRADABLE OILS
We will only use bio-degradable chain oil and 2 stroke oil on all our sites at all times, we believe this is vital in reducing our environmental footprint.
Protected Trees
If our quote is accepted and the tree has a Tree Preservation Order or is within a Conservation area, we will apply and deal with the local Authority to seek permission on your behalf free of charge.
PLANTING
We can advise, supply and plant any varieties of trees to suit the site, especially if this is a requirement from a local authority following works in a conservation area or on trees with Tree Preservation Orders
Hedge Trimming & Maintenance
Established hedges require trimming to keep them dense and compact. Formal hedges require more frequent trimming than informal hedges. We can also provide a regular maintenance plan if required.
24hr EMERGENCY TREE CALL-OUT
At Somerset Forestry we provide a 24hr tree call out service.
We can be contacted 24hrs a day for any tree related emergency.
Our 24hr emergency call out covers anything from wind damaged/unsafe trees to fallen trees blocking roads or access points.
Somerset Forestrys emergency 24hr tree call out service provides reassurance and peace of mind when it comes to dealing with dangerous or problematic trees that need to be dealt with promptly.
